It has been four months since I joined the Centre for System Design (CSD), NITK, Surathkal, as a Data Analytics Intern under Virtual Labs, and looking back, this journey has been a deeply enriching and insightful experience.
As a Computer Science and Engineering graduate from N.M.A.M. Institute of Technology, Nitte, I have always been passionate about data science and analytics. My previous work in machine learning and data visualization sparked my curiosity about how data can drive meaningful decisions. This internship has given me the perfect opportunity to expand my skills, explore real-world applications of data science, and contribute to impactful projects.
From the very beginning, I was introduced to the diverse range of projects undertaken at CSD. My mentor took me on a lab visit, giving me an overview of the various departments operating under CSD, such as Virtual Labs, E-Mobility, AR/VR, GIS, SRM, UAV and several others. Each of these departments focuses on innovative research and development in its respective field. It was interesting to see how these departments contribute to different technological advancements and practical solutions.
During my internship at Virtual Labs (VLab), I worked on analyzing data related to outreach, engagement, and participation. This involved studying trends in visits, workshops, and student involvement to understand usage patterns and improve engagement strategies. I also explored
CSD’s development and research activities, extracting insights from various datasets to evaluate its progress and impact. To present the findings effectively, I created dynamic dashboards, making data visualization more interactive and insightful. Among the tools I used, Power BI was the most utilized, helping me transform raw data into meaningful representations that supported better decision- making. Through this, I gained a clearer perspective on how data-driven decision-making plays a key role in guiding research and development efforts.
Beyond technical learning, what I appreciate the most is the supportive and collaborative environment at CSD. The mentorship here has been exceptional. Whenever I had doubts, my mentor was always ready to guide me. Working both independently and in a team has helped me develop a structured approach to analyzing problems and deriving meaningful insights.
Overall, these four months have been a valuable learning experience, allowing me to observe, analyze, and contribute in meaningful ways. The opportunity to explore different domains and work in a lively environment has made my journey at CSD truly rewarding. I look forward to the months ahead, eager to continue learning, growing, and making the most of this opportunity.
