URJA: Solar-Powered EV Charging Station at NITK

Visualizing URJA

Visualizing URJA

Conceptual design of NITK’s first solar EV charging station.

As part of its commitment to creating a green campus and reducing its carbon footprint, NITK Surathkal has taken a significant step toward sustainability with the launch of Project URJA – the institute’s first-ever solar-powered charging station for electric vehicles. Project URJA is a flagship initiative that supports the broader vision of a "Carbon Neutral NITK". This solar-powered e-mobility charging infrastructure has been generously contributed by the alumni of the 1970 batch, showcasing their enduring connection and commitment to their alma mater. The station supports the simultaneous charging of: 6 e-cycles 2 e-scooters or e-bikes 1 e-car Key technical specifications of the station include: A 7.5kW inverter 12 numbers of 400W solar panels Eight 12V 165Ah C10 tubular batteries Non-NITK vehicles can also access the charging facility through a pay-and-use model via the IRIS app, an in-house application developed at NITK. The entire project has been conceptualized and executed by the Centre for System Design (CSD), NITK Surathkal.
